NEWBURGH, N.Y. – In a matchup of two 6-2 teams in the Skyline Conference, St. Joseph's College (10-5) emerged with a 16-6 victory over Mount Saint Mary College (10-6) on Wednesday evening in Newburgh.
The Golden Eagles opened with consecutive tallies, only to be answered by back-to-back goals from the Knights. Sophomore
Ela Igdeler (Islip, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal and then hit freshman
Katie McGinnis (Shelton, Conn.) for a goal just 26 seconds later.
St. Joseph's stretched away, however, with a 6-0 run. Sophomore
Nicole Cacioppo (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and freshman
Jen Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) brought the Knights to within four with consecutive goals, but the Golden Eagles closed the half with the final three tallies and led 11-4 at the break.
The run continued into the second half, as the visiors opened with the next four goals. Senior
Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) finally broke up the run with 8:40 remaining, but her tally and one from freshman
Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) down the stretch would only serve to alter the final score.
Igdeler and Duffy each finished with two points on a goal and an assist. Duffy and McGinnis shared the team lead for groundballs with six and Igdeler nabbed a team-high four draw controls.
The Knights wrap up the regular season at home on Saturday against Montclair State. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Kaplan Field.
