Mount Edges Manhattanville on Leone's Single in Extra Innings

Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College freshman Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled home the game-winning run in the tenth inning as the Knights edged Manhattanville College by a final score of 2-1.  The Mount received nine strong innings from senior starting pitcher Justin Christensen (Carmel, N.Y.) in improving to 9-10 overall.  The Valiants drop to 8-19.

In the top of the tenth inning, freshman James Nakashian (Massapequa, N.Y.) drew a one-out walk and then moved to third on a double to left field from senior Thomas McNoble (Breezy Point, N.Y.).  On a 1-0 pitch, Leone singled through the left side, allowing Nakashian to cross with the go-ahead run.  The Knights would leave runners at the corners, however, as the next two batters popped out and flew out.

Senior Joe CoFrancesco (Hamden, Conn.) came on to start the tenth and induced three consecutive groundball outs to the left side to nail down the save. Christensen was stellar for nine innings, allowing just five hits and the one earned run while walking four and striking out three.  The senior claimed the win, his first of the year.

Manhattanville opened the scoring in the sixth, plating a run on a sacrifice fly.  The Knights answered immediately, pushing across a run in the seventh.  Graduate student Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then moved to third on a single from senior Alec Seidman (Poughquag, N.Y.).  With runners at the corners, senior Tim Stauder (East Meadow, N.Y.) singled through the left side to tie the game at 1-1.  A double play ended the rally, keeping the game tied.

The Knights got a strong performance from the top of their lineup.  The leadoff man, Nakashian, went 4-for-4 with a run scored, while the second place hitter, McNoble, went 3-for-5.  Seidman, Stauder, and Leone had the only other hits for the Knights.

Mount Saint Mary returns to Skyline play on Saturday and will host Purchase College in a double-header at Dutchess Stadium.  The games are set for a noon start in Fishkill.
