NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College scored seven runs in the first two innings and went on to a 9-7 victory over the City College of New York in non-conference action Monday afternoon. With the win, the Knights creep back towards the .500 mark at 6-7 overall.
The Mount strung together three hits and a walk in the first inning for four runs. Senior
Thomas McNoble (Breezy Point, N.Y.) started the rally with a double to left-center, and following a walk to junior
Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.), senior
Michael Morelli (Washingtonville, N.Y.) came through with an RBI double to center. Senior
Michael Matuk (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) followed with a two-run single up the middle and scored later in the inning on an error by the CCNY second baseman.
The Knights added to the lead with three runs in the top of the second. Freshman
James Nakashian (Massapequa, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, stole second, and then scored on a single down the left field line from freshman
Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.). Leone came around to score on McNoble's second double of the game. The lead ballooned to 7-0 when McNoble crossed the plate on an error by the right fielder.
CCNY cut into the lead with two runs in the third and two runs in the fourth, but the Knights were able to add a run in the sixth on a run-scoring double from Leone. The Beavers added two more runs in the sixth, however, and cut the deficit to just a single run with a single tally in the seventh. Mount Saint Mary added an insurance run in the eighth to make it 9-7, as Leone scored on a Carminati single through the right side.
Sophomore relief pitcher
Matt Schumacher (Commack, N.Y.) struck out two during a perfect eighth inning and senior
Joe CoFrancesco (Hamden, N.Y.) followed with two strikeouts during a perfect ninth inning to preserve the win for the Mount. Freshman
Preston Zanon (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) claimed the win for the Knights, while CoFrancesco was credited with a save.
Matuk and Leone led the offensive effort for the Mount, posting identical lines. Both players went 3-for-5 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs. McNoble added two hits (2-for-5) to go along with two runs and an RBI.
Up next for the Mount is a Skyline Conference double-header at Farmingdale State College. The games are set for a noon start on Saturday, April 6.
