- Behind a solid outing from sophomore Matt Schumacher (Commack, N.Y.), Mount Saint Mary College defeated Vassar College, 7-3, in non-conference action on Wednesday.  The Knights improve to 5-6 with the win.

Following three scoreless innings, the Knights struck for a pair of runs in the fourth.  Freshman Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off with a single to left, stole second, and scored when junior Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) singled through the middle.  Senior Michael Morelli (Washingtonville, N.Y.) followed with a double to left, plating Carminati.

Mount Saint Mary padded the lead with three runs in the sixth.  Leone doubled to put runners at second and third and senior Thomas McNoble (Breezy Point, N.Y.) followed with a two-run double to left.  The senior later scored on a sac fly from senior Michael Matuk (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).

The Brewers got three runs on a bases clearing double in the bottom of the sixth, but left two men on the bases and still trailed, 5-3.  After a scoreless seventh, the Knights added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth.  Carminati tripled and scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the inning.  Then, with runners at the corners, Morelli scored when Matuk stole second base, making it 7-3, Mount.

Freshman Silverio Santiago (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless eighth and senior Joe CoFrancesco (Hamden, Conn.) followed with a scoreless ninth to put the game away.  Schumacher went five and a third innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out three for the win.

Leone finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Carminati was also 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Mount Saint Mary hosts John Jay in a non-conference tilt on Thursday.  The game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill.
