Knights Fall at Vassar

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Playing its second game in as many days, Mount Saint Mary College fell to Vassar College, 19-7, in non-conference action on Sunday in Poughkeepsie.  The Knights fall back to 6-3, while the Brewers remain unbeaten at 4-0.

Vassar scored the opening two goals, but the Knights responded with the next two to tie the game.  Junior Erica Massmann (West Babylon, N.Y.) put home a feed from Jen Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) to get the Mount on the board and sophomore Ela Igdeler (Islip, N.Y.) followed with an unassisted goal.

The Brewers took the lead with 19:03 remaining in the opening half and a scoreless drought of nearly ten minutes ensued.  With 9:44 remaining, Mount senior Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) scored off an assist from sophomore Katy Cartelli (Yorktown, N.Y.) to tie the game at 3-3.  The Brewers closed the half on a 7-1 run, however, to take a 10-4 advantage at the half.

Vassar scored the opening goal of the second half, but Mount freshman Katie McGinnis (Shelton, Conn.) responded with back-to-back free position goals to cut the deficit to five at 11-6.  The Brewers put away all thoughts of a Mount comeback with the next three goals, and following a Cartelli goal with 10:54 remaining, scored the final five goals of the contest to wrap up the 19-7 victory.

Igdeler and Cartelli each finished with a goal and an assist for the Knights, matching McGinnis for a team-high two points each.  Freshman Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) nabbed a team-high five groundballs, while Igdeler led all players with six draw controls.

There's little rest for the weary Knights as they return to action on Monday for their third game in three days.  Mount Saint Mary takes on New Paltz in a game that will be played at Dietz Stadium in Kingston starting at 6:00 p.m.
