St. Joseph's Sweeps Mount

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - In the Skyline Conference openers for both teams, St. Joseph's College took both ends of a double-header from Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday.  The Golden Eagles (4-9, 2-0) won the opener, 15-6, and the nightcap, 9-4.  The Knights drop back to 3-5 on the year (0-2 Skyline).

The Golden Eagles struck first in game one, putting a single run on the board in the top of the third.  With the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning, Mount senior Michael Morelli (Washingtonville, N.Y.) laced a two-run single down the left field line to give the Knights the lead.  Unfortunately, Mount Saint Mary would leave the bases loaded in the frame, missing an early opportunity to take control.

St. Joseph's responded with four runs in the top of the fourth, and following a scoreless fifth, added four more in the top of the sixth for a 9-2 advantage.  The Knights got one back on an RBI groundout from junior Brian Buechele (LaGrange, N.Y.) in the bottom of the sixth, but still trailed by half a dozen.

The Golden Eagles put the game away for good with four runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.  Mount freshman Preston Zanon (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) lined a two-run triple to right-center in the bottom of the ninth, but it was far too little, far too late.

Morelli and Zanon each finished with a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs.  Buechele went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Freshman starting pitcher Sean Betterly (East Meadow, N.Y.) took the loss for the Knights.

Game two would prove to be more of the same.  St. Joseph's jumped out to a 4-0 lead with one run in the first and three in the second.  The Knights cut the deficit in half in the third when senior Thomas McNoble (Breezy Point, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch and sophomore Rocco Pepe (Commack, N.Y.) recorded an RBI groundout.

The Mount's chances took a major hit in the fourth inning, however, as the Golden Eagles pushed across five runs to take a 9-2 lead.  Mount senior Tim Stauder (East Meadow, N.Y.) came through with an RBI single in the sixth and Morelli launched a solo home run in the seventh, but the Knights would get no closer.

Morelli finished off a strong day with two more hits (2-for-3) to go along with two runs scored and an RBI.  Zanon allowed nine runs, all earned, over three and a third innings to take the loss.  Sophomore Matt Schumacher (Commack, N.Y.) delivered three-plus innings of scoreless relief following Zanon's departure in the fourth.

The Knights head to Maritime College for a pair of Skyline games on Sunday.  The opener is set for an 11:00 a.m. start in Throgs Neck, New York.
