Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The ECAC Metro Region title defense came to an abrupt halt on Wednesday evening as fourth-seeded Mount Saint Mary College was clipped by fifth-seeded John Jay College, 64-61, in a quarterfinal matchup. The Knights finish the season with an overall record of 19-9.
The Knights jumped out to a quick start, leading by as many as nine on a three-pointer from senior
Lenny Ragaglia (Staten Island, N.Y.) at the 12:42 mark. From there, however, a 13-4 lead turned into a 23-13 deficit as John Jay ripped off a 19-0 run. The Bloodhounds led by 10 at the break, 37-27.
In the second half, the Mount chipped away and closed to within two when junior
Joe Henain (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) put down a dunk while being fouled. The ensuing free throw was good to make the score, 52-50, John Jay, with 9:39 remaining.
Just a few minutes later, the Knights rattled off six straight points to tie the game. When junior
Chris Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) drained a pair of free throws with 4:37 on the clock, the game was tied at 56 apiece.
But John Jay answered with the next six to stretch back away. The Bloodhounds answered another Henain dunk with a bucket at the other end to maintain their six-point edge as the clock dipped under 30 seconds.
With 20 seconds on the clock, Mount senior
Ryan Straub (Massapequa, N.Y.) drained a three from the corner to cut the deficit to just three. The Knights stole the ensuing inbounds pass, and when they couldn't get an immediate look, called a timeout with seven seconds showing. Straub got a decent look from the same corner, but it wouldn't fall. The ensuing follow was also off the mark and the Knights fouled with just three-tenths of a second to play. The Bloodhounds missed the front end of the one-and-one, but a full court heave from the Mount went into the rafters and John Jay took the 64-61 win.
Henain led the Mount with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Straub chipped in with 14 points on the strength of four three-pointers. Ragaglia hit three times from downtown and finished with 11 points.
John Jay sophomore Kris Owens (Queens, N.Y.) matched Henain with a game-high 17 points, while junior Jamar Harry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) totaled 16 points on 7-of-15 from the field. Sophomore Michael Howard (New York, N.Y.) added 15 points for the Bloodhounds.
The Bloodhounds advance to play top-seeded Richard Stockton in the semifinals on Saturday.
