Knights Hang On For Win in Season Opener

Box Score

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – In the first game under new head coach Julia Steese, Mount Saint Mary College hung on down the stretch for an 8-6 win over Hartwick College in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.  The Knights move to 1-0, while the Hawks drop to 0-1.

After trading goals to open the game, Mount Saint Mary ripped off four in a row to take a 5-1 advantage.  Sophomore Ela Igdeler (Islip, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal at 20:08 and senior Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) followed with a free-position goal at 18:54 to spark the run.  Freshman Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) added a pair of first half tallies to give the Knights a 6-3 advantage at the break.

Freshman Katie McGinnis (Shelton, Conn.) opened the second half with a goal to push the Mount's lead to 7-3.  Hartwick senior Kate O'Shea (Ridgewood, N.J.) answered, but Spadaro found the back of the net once again to make it 8-4.  The Hawks crawled to within two on goals from freshman Selena Dardia (Freeville, N.Y.) and sophomore Emily Jweid (Marcy, N.Y.), but they would get no closer.  The teams were scoreless over the game's final 13:53 and the Knights held on for the 8-6 win.

Spadaro finished with three goals and a pair of assists for the Knights.  Duffy totaled two goals, while sophomore Danielle Krupka (Northport, N.Y.) added a goal and two assists.  Senior defender Erin Murray (Floral Park, N.Y.) racked up a game-high seven groundballs.  Freshman goalie Deirdre Ray (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) made six saves to earn the win.

Hartwick freshman Kia Ference (Schenectady, N.Y.) came away with a pair of goals, while freshman Ally Naja (Gansevoort, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist.  Sophomore goalie Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) made nine saves in defeat.

The Knights return to action on Wednesday, February 27 with a second straight home game.  The Mount hosts Marywood University at 7:00 p.m. on Kaplan Field.
