Second Half Run Sends Mount to Win

Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College overcame a half time deficit to defeat Maritime College, 69-60, in Skyline Conference action Tuesday night in the Bronx.  The Knights improve to 17-7 overall (13-4 Skyline) with the win, while the Privateers fall to 4-17 (3-13 Skyline).

The Knights trailed by one at the half, 29-28, due in large part to 13 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.  Junior Donte Howell (Baldwin, N.Y.) and senior Ryan Straub (Massapequa, N.Y.) opened the second half with back-to-back threes, however, and the Mount claimed a five-point advantage.

Maritime answered with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to cut the deficit back to two, but the Knights responded with a 14-0 run to take control of the contest.  Straub hit a pair of triples during the stretch and a bucket from senior Chris Frey (Old Bronxville, N.Y.) at the 12:46 mark gave the Knights a 48-32 lead.

The Privateers got back to within eight with an 8-0 run later in the half, but Straub drained another three-pointer to force the lead back to double digits.  Maritime wouldn't get closer than seven for the rest of the way, allowing the Knights to escape with a nine-point win.

Straub finished 4-of-7 from three and tied for the team lead with 17 points.  Junior Joe Henain (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) matched Straub with 17 points and completed a monster double-double with 19 rebounds.  He also blocked three shots.  Howell added 11 points and five assists for the Mount.

Senior Ron Bethea (Harlem, N.Y.) led the Privateers with 26 points on 8-of-18 from the field.  He hit four times from downtown.  Sophomore Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y.) posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards.

The Knights wrap up the regular season with a home game against Farmingdale State College on Saturday.  The tip is set for 3:00 p.m. as part of a double-header.
