THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – After an ice cold start, the Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team (4-3, 1-0 Skyline) erased an early 12-point deficit and played well down the stretch to grab its first Skyline Conference victory of the 2013-14 campaign with a 74-67 win over Maritime College (1-4, 0-1 Skyline) Monday evening.
A 15-2 run by the Privateers put the Knights in an early 18-6 hole. Down 23-12, the Knights went on a big run of their own, outscoring the home team 19-0 over the next seven minutes to grab a 29-23 advantage. Maritime rallied back for the final seven points of the half to take a 30-29 edge into the locker room.
A 14-2 run gave the Knights a safe 11-point cushion early in the second frame. They led by as many as 13 before Maritime started to chip away. Late in the period, the Privateers hit back-to-back threes to cut the deficit to just five points, but senior guard
Donte Howell (Baldwin, N.Y.) made his free throws to hold off the rallying home team and clinch the victory.
Howell led the Knights with 20 points on the evening, as well as seven assists, a season-high six rebounds and four steals. Senior forward
Joe Henain (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) picked up his third-straight double-double with 11 points and 11 boards. He also blocked five shots for the third time in his last four games. Sophomore guard
Stephen Steyer (Staten Island, N.Y.) posted his best game of the career, scoring 16 points and nine rebounds.
Sean Corley led the Privateers in the three major categories, picking up a double-double with 18 points and 11 assists while adding eight boards. Brendon Halligan also banked 18 points, while T'Vaughn Gibson cashed in with 12.
The Knights shot 43.1 percent from the field on Monday, while the host Privateers were good on 40 percent of their shots. The Mount was better on the glass, pulling down 43 rebounds to 36 for Maritime. Neither team was very good from the charity stripe, as the Knights made 13-of-22 (59.1 percent) of their free throws and the Privateers succeeded on 7-of-13 (53.8 percent).
The Knights return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 4, when they continue Skyline play with a road contest against The Sage Colleges. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
