Men’s Basketball Grabs First Win with 85-78 Decision over Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior forward Joe Henain (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) looked dominant in a double-double effort to lead the Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team (1-2) to its first win of the 2013-14 campaign with an 85-78 decision over Manhattanville College (1-2) on Saturday.

Henain picked up his first double-double of the season with 24 points and 12 rebounds, both game-highs, to get the Knights into the win column. 15 of Henain's points were scored in the second half as the Knights were holding off the rallying Valiants. He also pulled down eight second-half boards. He was successful on an impressive 84.6 percent of his shots from the field.

The Knights took their first lead with 18:03 remaining in the first half and held it into the break, taking a 40-32 lead into the locker room. The Valiants battled back in the second frame, taking a 49-48 lead with 14:29 left on the clock on a Wills Flynn three-pointer. Henain grabbed the lead back for the Knights 38 seconds later on a layup, but Manhattanville refused to let it get away.

The Valiants tied the score three more times, the latest coming with 7:24 to play at 64-64, but the Knights were finally able to break away. They outscored the home team, 21-14, over the final seven minutes to lock up the victory.

Senior guard Donte Howell (Baldwin, N.Y.) put in a solid effort, scoring 15 points and dishing out a game-high six assists. Senior forward Chris Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) added 16 points and grabbed another five rebounds for the Knights. Senior guard Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.) also managed double-digit points with 10 on the night, adding four assists as well. Senior guard Steve Phillips (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) matched Howell with six helpers.

Colin Campbell led the host Valiants with 18 points on the evening. Anthony Maestre was close behind with 17, while Andrew Winter grabbed a team-high eight boards.

The Knights showed much improved shooting on the evening, finishing with a 51.6 field goal percentage. The Valiants had a strong night from long distance with a 45.8 three-point percentage. The biggest difference came in the paint, as the Knights outscored the Valiants, 48-31, from inside the box.

The Knights return to action on Saturday, Nov. 23, when they host Brooklyn College in their home opener at the Kaplan Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
