Men’s Basketball Falls to Wesley, 66-55, in Season Opener

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team (0-1) fell short in its season opener, dropping a 66-55 decision to perennial NCAA Division III Tournament participant Wesley College (1-0) on Friday in the first day of the Blue Jay Invitational hosted by Johns Hopkins University.

Much of the first half was back and forth, as the teams were ultimately tied, 19-19, with 12:53 to go in the half. The Knights then scored a quick five points on a jumper by senior forward Joe Henain (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and a three by sophomore guard Stephen Steyer (Staten Island, N.Y.), but Wesley responded with a 12-0 run to take a 31-24 lead. Each team scored on a layup in the final minute, sending Wesley into the break with a 33-26 edge.

The Knights were unable to erase the deficit in the second half, coming as close as four points at 35-31 before the Wolverines started to run away with it. The Knights were eventually outscored, 33-29, in the second half, resulting in the final score of 66-55.

Wesley was led by David Langan, who picked up a double-double with 25 points and 16 rebounds, both game highs. Quincy Pettiford also contributed 16 points and six boards for the Wolverines, while Wayne Lennon added eight rebounds.

Henain fell one score short of a double-double, scoring eight points for the Knights while pulling down 13 rebounds. He also blocked two shots in the loss. Senior guard Donte Howell (Baldwin, N.Y.) led the Knights with 14 points, while senior forward Chris Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) recorded 10 points of his own.

A big portion of Wesley's success came from inside the paint. The Wolverines doubled up the Knights, 40-20, in points in the paint. They also outscored the Knights, 12-2, on second chance opportunities. Wesley shot 40.9 percent from the field compared to 32 percent for the Mount.

The Knights return to action tomorrow, Nov. 16. They will face off with the loser to tonight's late matchup between host Johns Hopkins and Moravian College. Tomorrow's game time is set for 6 p.m.
