Men’s Soccer Suffers 5-4 Overtime Loss to Purchase

Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y.- The Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team (10-4-2, 5-2-2 Skyline) suffered a tough loss on Saturday afternoon to Skyline opponent Purchase College (9-6-2, 6-2-1 Skyline), 5-4, in overtime.

The Knights celebrated senior day at Kaplan Field where seniors Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.), Brandon Mincher (Bayport, N.Y.), Rob Thompson (West Babylon, N.Y.), Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y) and Nick Dedrick (Trumbull, Conn.) were honored for their contributions to the men's soccer program for their tenure at the Mount.

The Mount started strong when senior forward Brandon Mincher (Bayport, N.Y.) received a cross from senior midfielder Sean Lockwood (Manahawkin, N.J) and netted the ball in the second minute of play. In the ninth minute, junior forward Matt Garcia (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) ran the ball up the middle and crossed it to the right side where he found sophomore forward Michael Ennis (Carmel, N.Y.) who placed the ball into the right side of the net.

Purchase responded in the 16th minute when Myles Clohessy received the ball from Junior Sanguina and was able to redirect the ball around the defenders into the net.

In a turn of events, senior goalkeeper Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y) received a red card by slide tackling an attacker in the box in the 36th minute of play which resulted in a goal off of a penalty kick, giving the Panthers a 3-2 edge.

The Mount had a rough start to the second half when freshman goalkeeper Tyler Biscone (Garden City, N.Y.) allowed a goal to sneak by him in the 48th minute. Down by two, senior defender Rob Thompson (West Babylon, N.Y.) sparked the Knights when he netted the ball off of an assist from Mincher and Ennis. In the 63rd minute Lockwood crossed the ball from the right side where he found junior defender Chris Marchese (Cold Spring, N.Y.) who netted the ball, making it a 4-4 game.

In overtime, Sanguina had the game winning goal for Purchase in the 93rd minute of play when he received the ball off of a free kick from the right wing and beat the goalkeeper. 

Biscone recorded five saves in the loss. Purchase goalkeeper Esteban Aguilar had 12 saves in the win.

The Knights outshot Purchase 27-16, Purchase had seven corner kicks to the Mount's four.

The Knights will be hosting a quarter-final match up on Saturday, November 2 and the opponent is yet to be determined.
