NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - Senior
Mary Ann Raftery (Long Beach, N.Y.) totaled 28 kills in two matches Friday evening, helping Mount Saint Mary College to a record of 1-1 at the first day of New Paltz's Hawk Invite. The Knights move to 3-6 on the year.
MSMC lost its opening match to Clarkson in straight sets (25-23, 26-24, 25-6). Raftery posted a team-high 13 kills against just three hitting errors. Senior
Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, N.Y.) added 18 assists, while freshman
Jen Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) totaled a team-high nine digs.
The Knights rebounded nicely in match two, taking down Oswego in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-23). Raftery racked up 15 kills and 16 digs to lead the team in kills and tie for the team-high with Gries in digs. Halverson was credited with 27 assists, helping freshman
Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore
Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) to seven and six kills, respectively.
With a total of 45 assists on day one, Halverson edged closer to the all-time career mark held by Katie Toole (2,032 assists in 321 sets).
The Knights continue play at New Paltz tomorrow with matches against Old Westbury and Alfred.
