PURCHASE, N.Y. - Sophomore
Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) had two hits in each game and senior pitcher
Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) made a strong start as Mount Saint Mary College swept Purchase College on Saturday afternoon. The Knights (20-15, 10-6) advance to the Skyline Tournament and will serve as the fourth seed.
McCrea limited the Panthers to just two runs on ten hits through 6-2/3 innings to claim the win in game one. Sophomore
Russ Pagano (Cedar Grove, N.J.) recorded the next four outs before turning it over to junior
Joe CoFrancesco (Hamden, Conn.). CoFrancesco recorded all three outs in the ninth via strikeout to claim the save.
MSMC got on the board in the first and never looked back. Freshman
Alex Velardi (Branford, Conn.) singled, moved to second on a single by senior
John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.), and then scored on a Carminati single. The Mount added two more runs in the second when junior
Michael Matuk (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) laced a two-run double. Junior
Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.) tripled home a run in the fifth and then scored to make it 5-0 on a sac fly from senior
Brian McNoble (Lynbrook, N.Y.).
Carminati finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Cherubino went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Brian McNoble also had a pair of hits (2-for-4), a run, and an RBI.
In the second contest, MSMC blew open a 2-2 game with eight runs in the third inning. Junior
Michael Morelli (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and sophomore
Anthony D'Agostino (Wallington, N.J.) each launched three-run homers in the inning as the Knights took a 10-2 advantage.
Sophomore Mike Klein (Elmont, N.Y.) made the start for the Knights and allowed four hits and two earned runs over three innings. Freshman
Matt Schumacher (Commack, N.Y.) pitched the next three frames, yielding five hits and two runs before turning it over to Pagano once again. Pagano pitched a perfect seventh to close out the sweep for the Knights.
Morelli finished 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored to lead the way, while Conroy would up 3-for-5 with three runs scored an an RBI. Matuk, Carminati, and
Brian McNoble each added a pair of hits for the Mount.
The fourth-seeded Knights will host fifth-seeded College of Mount Saint Vincent in next week's conference tournament.
