Mount Falls Behind Early, Never Recovers in Losses to St. Joseph's College

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College fell behind early in each of the two games on Sunday and ultimately dropped both ends of the Skyline Conference double-header to St. Joseph's College.  The Golden Eagles (18-14, 12-2) won the opener, 12-4, and game two, 11-6.  The Knights fall to 17-15 overall and to 8-6 in Skyline play.

In game one, the Golden Eagles jumped all over MSMC senior starting pitcher Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.).  With four runs in the second and seven runs in the third, SJC had all the runs they would need on the way to a 12-4 win.

The Knights got a pair of runs in the sixth on RBI singles from senior Brian McNoble (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and freshman Alex Velardi (Branford, Conn.), but it wouldn't be nearly enough.  Sophomore Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) also had an RBI single in the ninth.  He finished 2-for-5 with a run and the RBI and was the only Knight with multiple hits.

The story was very much the same in game two, as St. Joseph's knocked around junior starter Joe CoFrancesco (Hamden, Conn.).  The Golden Eagles tallied five runs in the second and four more in the third to lead, 9-1, after three.

Mount Saint Mary had a better response this time, going for five runs in the fourth.  Senior John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.) came through with a two-run single down the left field line to cut the deficit to 9-4 and then scored on a St. Joe's error.  Carminati doubled and also scored on an error to make it 9-6.

The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, as the Knights stranded a pair of runners in the sixth.  MSMC went quietly in the seventh, allowing St. Joseph's to finish off the victory.

Conroy was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, while Carminati finished 2-for-4 with a run.  Sophomore Anthony D'Agostino (Wallington, N.J.) also had a pair of hits for the Knights in game two.

Mount Saint Mary will play three non-conference games on the road this weekend before closing Skyline play on Saturday with a trip to Purchase.
