FISHKILL, N.Y. - With a balanced attack and solid pitching, the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team earned a sweep of Maritime College in Skyline Conference action on Tuesday. The Knights improve to 17-10 overall and to 8-2 in the conference.
In game one, the Knights opened up a comfortable lead with four runs in the third inning. Senior
Brian McNoble (Lynbrook, N.Y.) delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-run double that made the score, 6-1.
MSMC added four more runs in the eight inning to open up an 11-2 advantage. Junior
Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.) laced a two-run triple to highlight the inning and then scored on a wild pitch.
Senior
Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) went eight innings to earn the win for the Knights. He allowed eight hits and just one earned run.
Five players had multiple hits for the Mount, but every starter had at least one hit. Sophomore
Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while McNoble finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Junior
Thomas McNoble (Breezy Point, N.Y.) had two hits, as did freshman
Alex Velardi (Branford, Conn.) and sophomore
Zach Kenny (Hicksville, N.Y.). McNoble scored three times, while Velardi scored twice.
In game two, the Knights jumped out to a 6-3 lead with four runs in the second and two runs in the third.
Brian McNoble started the second with a two-run double which was followed by run-scoring singles from Velardi and
Thomas McNoble. In the third, Cherubino tripled home a run and then scored on a single from sophomore
Anthony D'Agostino (Wallington, N.J.).
Junior
Joe CoFrancesco (Hamden, Conn.) worked six and a third innings to claim the win. He allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out nine.
D'Agostino added a two run single in the fifth and finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Cherubino went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while
Brian McNoble was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Velardi,
Thomas McNoble, and Carminati also had two hits apiece.
Up next for the Knights is a road trip to Albertus Magnus College. The game has been moved back to a 6:00 p.m. start on Thursday in New Haven, Connecticut.
