OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team maintained their hold on third place in the Skyline Conference standings with a split with Old Westbury on Sunday. The Knights (13-9 overall, 6-2 Skyline) won the opener, 10-4, but dropped the second game by a final of 8-0.
MSMC jumped out early in game one with four runs in the top of the first. Sophomore
Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.), junior
Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.), and senior
Brian McNoble (Lynbrook, N.Y.) put together consecutive RBI singles to give the Mount a 4-0 advantage.
The Knights added two more in the fourth behind back-to-back run-scoring singles from junior
Michael Matuk (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and senior
John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.). Conroy also laced a two-run single to left-center during a four-run eighth, as MSMC added insurance runs.
Senior
Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) worked seven innings for the win, allowing eight hits and two earned runs. Freshman
Brandon Lubrano (Mineola, N.Y.) worked the final two innings, allowing two runs on four hits, as the Knights went on to a 10-4 victory.
Freshman
Alex Velardi (Branford, Conn.) went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Matuk finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Carminati added two hits (2-for-4), two runs, and an RBI.
In game two, the Knights managed just two hits (Matuk and Carminati) as Old Westbury went on to an 8-0 win. Junior starting pitcher
Joe CoFrancesco (Hamden, Conn.) allowed eight runs over five-plus innings and took the loss for the Mount.
Mount Saint Mary will travel to New Paltz for a non-conference game on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
