NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Facing Farmingdale State College, the Mount Saint Mary College men's lacrosse team fell behind early and could never catch up en route to a 17-3 defeat. The Mount falls to 4-6 on the season and they are still searching for their first Skyline win. With the win, the Rams improve to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in Skyline play.
The Rams struck first, rattling off the first two goals to take a 2-0 advantage a little over five minutes into the game. An unassisted tally by Mount freshman
Jake Robison (Franklin Square, N.Y.) at the 8:29 mark made it a one goal game in the early going.
Another Farmingdale goal closed out the first quarter and started a 14-0 run for the Rams that spanned three periods. Farmingdale senior Jason Opitz (West Hempstead, N.Y.) accounted for three of the Rams four goals during the second quarter as the Rams jumped ahead by six at the break, 7-1.
The Knights struggled to gain possession on the faceoff all day and an 8-3 advantage in faceoffs during the third quarter resulted in a nine goal quarter. With just 32 seconds left in the third, Mount sophomore
Matt O'Donnell (Wallkill, N.Y.) finally got the Knights back on the board, finishing a pass from freshman
David Hobbs (Baldwin, N.Y.).
In the fourth quarter, play slowed and both teams combined for just 10 shots. With under two minutes to play, Mount freshman
CJ Cardo (Merrick, N.Y.) wrapped around the right side of the crease and fired a shot low to account for the Knights' third and final goal of the game.
The trio of Cardo, O'Donnell and Robison accounted for the Knights' goals. Freshman defender
Dave Morris (Floral Park, N.Y.) caused two turnovers and goalkeeper
Shawn Cobstill (Oneonta, N.Y.) recorded 11 saves.
Opitz led the rams with six points (5G,1A), while freshman Dan Cozier (West Islip, N.Y.) followed with five points (1G,4A).
Junior Bobby Thomas (Sayville, N.Y.) scored two goals, while also dishing out two assists. Goalkeeper Patrick Delventhal (Westbury, N.Y.) earned the win in net.
The Knights will hit the road for a non-conference contest on Monday, April 2 at Wells College. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
