Knights Clobber Yeshiva in Skyline Action

FISHKILL, N.Y. - With 32 hits in two games, the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team swept a Skyline Conference double-header from Yeshiva University on Thursday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium.  The Knights won the opener, 15-1, and the second game, 19-3.

In the opener, Mount Saint Mary scored multiple runs in each of the first five innings.  Junior Michael Morelli (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and senior Max Tecce (Glen Cove, N.Y.) had RBI singles in the first inning, while sophomores Chris Chieffo (Waterbury, Conn.) and Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) followed with RBIs in the second inning.

The Knights blew open the game with five runs in the third.  Freshman Anthony Licata (Franklin Square, N.Y.) delivered a pair of runs with an RBI single to left-center.  Carminati followed with a two-run single through the left side and then scored when Tecce singled to right field.

MSMC added four in the fourth and two in the fifth, but with junior Thomas McNoble (Breezy Point, N.Y.) cruising on the mound, the runs were unneccesary.  McNoble allowed just five hits over six innings and fanned 10 batters to claim the victory.

Chieffo finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs, while Licata went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Morelli also came up with three hits (3-for-3), extending his streak of consecutive at-bats with a hit to seven.  The junior was 4-for-4 yesterday against Staten Island.

The Knights continued to pound the ball in game two.  After a scoreless first, MSMC exploded for six runs in the second.  Chieffo got things started with ann RBI double to right-center and Thomas McNoble followed with a two-run double to left-center.  Carminati collected a pair of RBIs when he singled to left and then completed the inning by scoring on a passed ball.

Five more runs in the third put the game out of reach.  Sophomore Anthony D'Agostino (Wallington, N.J.) and Tecce had RBI singles in the inning, while Carminati and senior Brian McNoble (Lynbrook, N.Y.) each came up with a sacrifice fly.

Senior Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) pitched a perfect two innings and was awarded the win as he was the pitcher of record in a game that the Knights had planned to use three or more pitchers.  Freshman Alex Velardi (Branford, Conn.) pitched two perfect innings in relief, while sophomore Angelo Biondo (Hauppauge, N.Y.) closed out the contest with a scoreless seventh frame.

Thomas McNoble, Brian McNoble, Chieffo, Tecce, and junior Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.) each had a pair of hits for the Knights.  Carminati finished with a team-high three RBIs.

MSMC continues Skyline Conference play on Saturday with a double-header against Maritime.  The games are set for a noon start at Delano-Hitch Stadium in Newburgh.
