NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team notched its first Skyline Conference win of the season with a 20-4 win over The Sage Colleges on Wednesday night. With the win, the Knights move to 3-5 on the year, while the loss drops the Gators to 1-6 and 0-2 in Skyline play.
The Mount wasted little time getting on the board, as sophomore
Nicole Palmieri (East Northport, N.Y.) wrapped around the crease and netted the first goal of the night just 25 seconds into the game. Four more Mount goals followed in a twelve minute span as the Knights jumped out to a 5-0 lead before a goal by Sage senior Ginelle Butler (Malta, N.Y.) got the Gators on the board.
The Knights would close out the first half on a 7-0 run, in which five different Knights scored. Mount junior
Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) added three goals and an assist during the run, while Palmieri and freshmen
Ela Igdeler (Islip, N.Y.) and
Nicole Cacioppo (Glen Cove, N.Y.) each tallied their second of the night. In the first half, the Mount held a commanding 24-4 advantage in shots, which resulted in a 12-1 lead at the break.
Igdeler opened up scoring in the second half and teammates
Danielle Krupka (King's Park, N.Y.) and
Mikaely Whitehouse (Columbia, Conn.) followed with goals. Sage sophomore Alayna Kaiser (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) halted the Knights run at the 22:06 mark with the Gators' second goal of the night. Kaiser went on to add two more unassisted tallies, but the Knights cruised to a 21-6 win.
Spadaro led all scorers with eight points (6G,2A), while Igdeler followed with five points (4G,1A). Palmieri recorded a hat trick and both Cacioppo and sophomore
Amanda Giarrizzo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tallied two goals. Freshman goalkeeper
Lauren Beltrami (Islip, N.Y.) earned her third win of the season, making five saves.
Kaiser led the Gators with three goals, while Butler added a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Mary Kate Hayward (Queensbury, N.Y.) recorded eight saves in the loss.
After a busy week of play, the Knights will travel to Farmingdale State College for a Skyline Conference contest. The Knights will face the Rams, who are currently first in the conference, at 1:00 p.m.
