Misericordia Hands Knights Second Straight Loss

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's lacrosse team suffered a 21-6 loss to Misericordia University on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss the Knights fall below the .500 mark with an overall record of 4-5. The Cougars improve to 6-1 with the win.

The Cougars got on the board just 26 seconds into the game as senior Lee Blair (West Orange, N.J.) recorded an unassisted tally to put them up, 1-0. In transition, Mount freshman defender Dave Morris (Floral Park, N.Y.) pushed the ball ahead to sophomore Stephen Kozal (Brewster, N.Y.). While on the run, Kozal buried a shot at the 8:29 mark to account for the Knights' lone goal of the half. Misericordia used two seven goal periods to establish a 14-1 lead at the break.

After the Cougars opened up the third quarter with two quick goals, Mount freshman David Hobbs (Baldwin, N.Y.) broke the scoring drought at the 9:26 mark with an unassisted tally. Trailing by 15, 17-2, and with 8:00 in the third, Mount freshman Jake Robison (Franklin Square, N.Y.) netted his first of the night off a pass from junior Nick Findlay (Elmont, N.Y.). Goals by senior Pat Byrne (Milford, Conn.) and sophomore Matt O'Donnell (Wallkill, N.Y.) followed and O'Donnell's goal made the score 17-5.

Although the Knights limited the Cougars to just three goals in the fourth, Mount junior Andrew Pullen (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored their only goal of the quarter. The Cougars used a 22-31 advantage at the faceoff to race away with a 21-6 win.

Pullen, O'Donnell, Robison, Hobbs, Byrne and Kozal each added single goals for the Knights. Findlay continued to feed his teammates, tallying two assists. Sophomore goalie Shawn Cobstill (Oneonta, N.Y.) made 13 saves, despite earning the loss.

Misericordia junior Sean McGuigan (Middletown, D.E.) scored a game-high fives goals, while also dishing out an assist. Blair put together a five point game (4G,1A) and teammate Kyle Calabro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) added three goals and one assist. Freshman Patrick Johnson (Montville, N.J.) made nine saves to preserve the win.

Looking to rebound, the Knights will host Farmingdale State College on Saturday, March 31. The Skyline Conference match-up is set for 12:00 p.m.
