FISHKILL, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College swept Polytechnic Institute of NYU on Sunday to complete the opening weekend of Skyline Conference play with a record of 3-1. The Knights are now 10-7 overall.
MSMC roared out of the gates in game one, scoring five runs in the first inning. In the third, a two-run single from junior
Thomas McNoble (Breezy Point, N.Y.) gave the Knights a 9-0 advantage. Then, to cap a six-run fourth inning, junior
Michael Matuk (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and senior
John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.) came up with back-to-back RBI singles, making in 15-0, Mount. The Knights added three more runs in the seventh, getting RBI singles from sophomore
Chris Chieffo (Waterbury, Conn.), sophomore
Zach Kenny (Hicksville, N.Y.), and again from McNoble.
Freshman starting pitcher
Brandon Lubrano (Mineola, N.Y.) allowed just five hits over six innings and struck out five to earn the victory. Freshman
Alex Velardi (Branford, Conn.) pitched the seventh inning to close out the victory.
McNoble finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Conroy went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Matuk and sophomore
Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) each added a pair of hits for the Knights.
The story was the same in game two, as the Mount racked up six runs in the opening frame. Following an RBI single from senior
Brian McNoble (Lynbrook, N.Y.), Carminati doubled down the left-field line to force home two more runs. Velardi capped the inning with a single back through the box, plating another set of runs. Velardi also collected a sac fly in the third that made it 7-2, Knights. Junior
Michael Morelli (Washingtonville, N.Y.) had an RBI single in the fourth to drive in the eighth run of the game for MSMC.
Junior starting pitcher
Justin Christensen (Carmel, N.Y.) worked the first four innings to claim the victory. Freshman
David Hobbs (East Rockaway, N.Y.) struck out four over a perfect final two innings to claim the save.
Conroy had two more hits (2-for-4) and a pair of runs scored, while sophomore
Anthony D'Agostino (Wallington, N.J.) also added a pair of hits (2-for-2) and a run scored. Velardi went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run, as Carminati went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.
The Knights will take on the College of Staten Island in a non-conference game on Wednesday, March 28. The game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
