NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team rallied in the second half to pull to within five, but they eventually fell by a score of 14-8 to Kean University in a Skyline Conference contest. With the loss, the Mount drops to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Cougars move to 3-4 on the year and an even 1-1 in Skyline play.
The Mount opened up the game with back-to back goals coming just two minutes apart to jump ahead 2-0. Junior
Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) added the first as she wrapped around the crease and fired a shot in the back of the net, while freshman
Ela Igdeler (Islip, N.Y.) followed with an unassisted tally. Kean junior Lyndsey Cannon (Delran, N.J.) added three consecutive goals in a four-minute span, while the Cougars used a 6-0 run to build a 6-2 lead with 5:50 remaining in the first.
Kean opened up the second half on a four goal run, but an unassisted goal by Mount sophomore
Erica Massmann (West Babylon, N.Y.) halted the run and brought the Knights to within seven. With just over ten minutes to play, the Knights pulled to within five with back-to-back goals by senior
Ellen Cashin (Rockaway Beach, N.Y) and sophomore
Amanda Giarrizzo (Franklin Square, N.Y.).
In the final ten minutes, Massmann added her second of the night and sophomore
Nicole Palmieri (East Northport, N.Y.) converted a free position attempt to give the Knights eight goals. Cannon scored her fifth and sixth goals of the game in the closing minutes to seal the win for the Cougars.
Spadaro and Massman each tallied two goals for the Mount. Igdeler, Cashin, Palmieri and Giarrizzo each scored lone goals for the Knights, while freshman goalie
Lauren Beltrami (Islip, N.Y.) made 16 saves.
Cannon finished with a game-high eight points (6G, 2A) , in addition to causing three turnovers. Sophomore Ciara Mastrodomenico (Blairstown, N.J.) scored five goals, while also dishing out an assist. Junior goalkeeper Jules Keeley (Ocean Township, N.J.) recorded seven saves.
Looking to rebound quickly, the Knights host Green Mountain College on Monday, March 26. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
