BANGOR, Maine – The Mount Saint Mary College men's lacrosse team surpassed its 2011 win total with a 12-8 victory over Husson University on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Knights improve to 3-3 on the year, while the loss drops the Eagles to an even 3-3.
Just 47 seconds into the game, the Mount jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sophomore
Matt O'Donnell (Wallkill, N.Y.) buried a shot. The Eagles quickly responded and the score remained deadlocked until the Knights struck again five minutes later. This time, Cardo dished the ball off to teammate
Logan Sollami (Cornwall, N.Y.) who finessed the ball into the back of the net.
Cardo's second goal of the day pushed the Knights ahead by two, but a goal by Husson sophomore Ben Potter (Chula Vista, Ca.) once again made it a one point game, 3-2. The Knights capitalized on a man-up opportunity to open up the second quarter. Junior
Andrew Pullen (Farmingdale, N.Y.) moved the ball to Cardo, who added his third of the day. Consecutive goals by O'Donnell in a 43 second span gave the Knights a 6-3 lead, before a Husson goal cut the deficit to two before the break.
Husson midfielder Mike Craig (Kennebunk, ME) added the only goal of the third quarter and brough the Eagles to within one at the start of the fourth. An illegal procedure call against the Mount on the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter incited much controversary. A slew of penalties against the Knights created a two man-up opportunity for the Eagles. Husson senior Ben Landry (Lewiston, ME) made the Knights pay for the penalities, adding two goals during the minute and putting the Eagles up by one, 7-6.
With his team down by one, Mount freshman
Jake Robison (Franklin Square, N.Y.) picked a great time to score. Robison added back to back goals to put the Knights back on top, 8-7, with nine minutes to go. A mishandled play resulted in a Husson goal at the 7:24 mark that evened the score 8-8.
With the game deadlocked and under five minutes on the clock, Robison netted his third of the night, which proved to be the game-winner. Down by one and with the clock ticking down, the Eagles were forced to pressure. Aggressive play by Husson opened the door for the Mount and lead to three insurance goals for the Knights.
Robison had an impressive performance, tallying a hat-trick and two assists. Cardo finished with two goals and four assists, while O'Donnell chipped in with three goals. Sophomore goalie
Shawn Cobstill (Oneonta, N.Y.) tallied nine saves to earn the win.
Landry led the Eagles with four goals, while Potter added one goal and two assists. Goalkeeper John Hooper III (Wakefield, R.I.) made six saves in relief.
On Wednesday, March 21 the Knights will host SUNYIT in a non-conference contest. The game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
