GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Playing without several key players following the ejections earlier in the week, the Mount Saint Mary College men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-2 decision to Gwynedd-Mercy College on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Knights move to 2-3 on the season, while the Griffins even their record at 2-2.
The Griffins jumped ahead by two in the first quarter before a goal by Mount sophomore
Matt O'Donnell (Wallkill, N.Y.) finally got the Knights on the board with 4:09 showing on the clock. In the final three minutes of the first, Gwynedd-Mercy tacked on three more goals to go ahead, 5-1, at the conclusion of the first.
After recording just four shots in the second and third quarters combined, the Knights struggled offensively after O'Donnell's goal. Gwynedd-Mercy totaled 26 shots over the two quarters and used an 8-0 run to take a 10-1 lead at the end of the third. Four different Griffins scored goals during the run, while senior Craig Trueblood (Smithsburg, M.D.) added his second and third of the game to complete the hat trick.
Trailing by nine at the beginning of the fourth, O'Donnell struck with his second of the day to give the Knights their second and final goal of the game. Gwynedd-Mercy sophomore Nathan Pendleton (Carlisle, Pa.) scored three of the Griffins' final five goals as they closed out the game on a 5-0 run.
O'Donnell tallied both goals for the Knights, while freshman
David Hobbs (Baldwin, N.Y.) recorded an assist. Although the Knights were outshot 59-11, Mount goalkeeper freshman
Connor Haran (Massapequa, N.Y.) was poised, totaling 25 saves in his first career start.
Pendleton led the way for the Griffins with four goals and Trueblood added three goals and two assists. Junior goalie Ryley O'Keefe (Coatesville, Pa.) made five saves in the win.
Once again the Knights will hit the road for their next contest, traveling to Husson University in Bangor, Maine. The Knights will face Husson on Saturday, March 17 in a 1:00 p.m.
