Box Score
NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College senior
Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) totaled 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists as his team rolled to a 98-73 Skyline victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday. The Knights improved to 16-5 overall (11-3 Skyline), while the Dolphins fell to 8-13 overall (6-8 Skyline).
With his first rebound of the second half, Valdez set the all-time Mount Saint Mary record for career rebounds, surpassing 2005 graduate, Ken Lane. Valdez now has 943 rebounds for his career and is poised to challenge the 1,000-rebound mark with four regular season games to play and at least one postseason game.
Leading by just two (24-22) with 6:44 remaining in the opening half, the Knights opened up some distance with a 13-0 run. Sophomore
Donte Howell (Baldwin, N.Y.) canned a three-pointer with 4:28 remaining and then picked up a steal on the ensuing possession. Howell found sophomore
Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.) on the fast break for a layup, forcing Mount Saint Vincent to take a timeout.
The Mount led by 16 at the break and was never really challenged in the second half. A fast break dunk from Valdez with 9:25 to play pushed the lead to 30, the biggest margin of the night. The Dolphins got back to within 16 down the stretch, but back-to-back threes from sophomore
AJ Uhl (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and junior
Lenny Ragaglia (Staten Island, N.Y.) put the game on ice for the Knights.
Valdez hit on 7-of-12 from the field for his 16 points. Ragaglia connected four times from downtown to finish with 14, while Stabach and senior
Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) each finished with 13 points. Howell totaled 11 points and eight assists and sophomore
Chris Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) also reached double figures with 10 points.
Junior Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all scorers with 21 points for Mount Saint Vincent. Junior Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit five triples on eight attempts to finish with 15 points.
The Knights will host St. Joseph's College in a matchup of two of the top three Skyline teams on Thursday night. The game, a rescheduled event from January, will start at 8:00 p.m. in the Kaplan Center, following the conclusion of the women's game.
