Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Seven players scored in double figures on Saturday as Mount Saint Mary College defeated Maritime College by a score of 101-73 in Skyline Conference action. The Knights have now won five games in a row to improve to 10-4 overall (5-2 Skyline), while the Privateers have dropped four straight to fall to 2-12 overall (2-5 Skyline).
Trailing 8-5 in the early going, Mount junior
Chris Frey (Old Brookville, N.Y.) came off the bench to spark the Knights. Frey would score six points and infuse some much-needed energy to the lineup in leading the team back to an 18-18 tie. Juniors
Ryan Straub (Massapequa, N.Y.) and
Lenny Ragaglia (Staten Island, N.Y.) also hit three-pointers off the bench to right the ship for the Mount.
When the starters re-entered the game, they would finish off a 17-0 run to make the score 30-18 as the clock dipped under eight minutes to play in the opening half. Sophomore
Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.) capped the run with back-to-back three-pointers, both coming on feeds from sophomore
Chris Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.).
The Knights led 51-35 at the half and withstood several second half runs from Maritime, which would never get within single digits. When the Privateers cut their deficit to 11 with 10:31 to play, Stabach canned two more triples to put away all thoughts of a comeback. A layup from senior
Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) at 7:49 finished off a 12-0 run and Maritime wouldn't threaten again.
Stabach hit on 6-of-11 from three-point range to finish with a team-high 18 points. Frey tallied 13 points, a career-high, as well as eight rebounds, while Valdez added 13 points and seven boards. Sophomore
Anthony Cipriano (Staten Island, N.Y.) added a career-high 11 points off the bench and senior
Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) finished with 10 points and six boards. Sophomore
AJ Uhl (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) hit on 4-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from three to finish with a career-high 10 points, while Straub matched a career-high with 10 points.
Maritime senior Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y.) led the Privateers with 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting and also collected a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y.) added 19 points, while junior Hugh Byrd (Newfoundland, N.J.) pitched in with 11.
Both teams shot the ball extremely well, with the Knights clocking in at 55.9-percent and the Privateers at 51.9-percent. Mount Saint Mary hit on 15-of-31 (48.4-percent) from three, while Maritime made 7-of-14 (50.0-percent) from long range.
With their 101 points, the Knights reached the century mark for the first time since February 20, 2008, a game in which they lost, 103-100, to Bard College in overtime.
Mount Saint Mary will play three consecutive home games next week, starting with Purchase College on Tuesday, January 17. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Kaplan Center.
