Knights Preserve Tie With Centenary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Two late goals by Centenary College sent Thursday's non-conference game into overtime, and despite several opportunities for Mount Saint Mary College in extra time, the game would finish in a 2-2 tie. The Knights move to 2-2-1 on the year, while the Cyclones are now 2-1-1.

The Knights dominated the early action and were rewarded with a pair of goals inside the first 17 minutes. Freshman Mark Maus (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) put the Mount on the board in the 12th minute when a corner kick fell to the turf in the box. Maus emerged from the scramble and found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Then, in the 17th minute, the Knights put together a tremendous sequence of passes to secure their second goal of the evening. Moving forward from of the back, junior Christian Redl (Poughkeepsie, N.Y) settled a loose ball. When pressured, Redl found freshman Sean Miyaki (Trumbull, Conn.), who consequently fed the ball back to Redl on a give-and-go. Redl's cross to the far side of the field found junior Matt Pagano (Mahopac, N.Y.), who took one touch before ripping a shot that beat the goalkeeper.

Mount Saint Mary would continue to have the better of the play until the late stages of the second. In the 79th minute, Centenary took advantage of a free kick deep in the Mount's end. Sophomore Nicholas Telle (Union, N.J.) headed home the cross from senior Andrew Pinnella (Brielle, N.J.) to cut the Cyclone deficit to one.

Less than four minutes later, Pinnella tied the game on a pretty feed from senior Danny Berniz (Budd Lake, N.J.). Berniz slotted a pass to Pinnella from the left side and Pinnella's shot beat the Mount goalkeeper to the far post.

The Knights would have one brilliant scoring chance down the stretch in regulation, but Pagano's shot in the 87th minute was tipped by Centenary senior goalkeeper Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J.) and caromed harmlessly off the crossbar. The best opportunity in extra time would come in the 95th minute as a header at the far post from junior Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y.) went just wide of the frame.

It was a terrific display of goalkeeping from both sides, as Centenary's Rogers finished with nine saves, while Mount Saint Mary sophomore Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) would finish with seven.

The Knights face a road trip to Scranton University over the weekend. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
