FISHKILL, N.Y. – A rainy and windy afternoon didn't stop a competitive baseball game on Wednesday, as Vassar College edged Mount Saint Mary College, 4-2, in non-conference action at Dutchess Stadium. The Brewers improved to 9-7 overall, while the Knights dropped to 8-11.

After a scoreless opening three innings, Vassar broke through with two runs in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded, senior Mike Plude (Shelton, Conn.) singled home the first run of the game and when senior Joe Bubar (Washington, D.C.) grounded into a fielder's choice, the Brewers led, 2-0.

It would be a quick response for the Mount, however, who plated two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth. Back-to-back run-scoring singles from sophomore Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.) and junior Josh Depew (Montgomery, N.Y.) tied the game at 2-2.

Vassar would scratch out another run in the top of the fifth, benefitting from a leadoff double by sophomore Mike Perrone (Seaford, N.Y.). Perrone stole third and then scored on a sac fly from junior Sal Costanzo (Cooper City, Fla.) to reclaim the lead for the Brewers.

From there, it was the Vassar bullpen which blanked the Knights for the rest of the way. Winning pitcher, freshman Harrison Remler (Port Washington, N.Y.), worked out of a second-and-third situation in the fifth and then escaped a leadoff single in the sixth to maintain the lead for the Brewers. Junior Race Bottini (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) pitched around a leadoff single in the seventh, while sophomore Max Frankel (Larchmont, N.Y.) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth. Freshman Dave Robbins (Rumson, N.J.) came on to pitch a perfect ninth to shut the door and claim the save.

The Brewers added an insurance run in the eighth when Castilla alertly moved from first to third on a sacrifice bunt. He would score later in the inning on a Bubar sac fly, making it 4-2 in favor of the visitors.

The story of the day was men left on base for the Knights. All told, Mount Saint Mary stranded 11 runners on the bases. The Knights received two hits each from four players – junior Joe Clarke (Middletown, N.Y.), sophomore Michael Morelli (Washingtonville, N.Y.), Cherubino, and Depew – but a clutch hit went lacking.

Senior pitcher Matt Paci (Goshen, N.Y.) took the loss for the Mount.

Up next for the Knights is Tuesday's rescheduled game with SUNY New Paltz. Game time is 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 7.
