Morelli Slam, Peisel Homer Help Mount to Non-Conference Win

BELLEROSE, N.Y. - Sparked by a grand slam from sophomore Michael Morelli (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and a solo shot from senior Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team posted a 10-7 non-conference victory over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Thursday evening.  The Knights improve to 15-14 overall heading toward next week's Skyline Conference Tournament.

Peisel opened the scoring with his solo home run to left in the second inning. The Bears would answer with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth and led 2-1 through five innings.

After two flyouts to open the top of the sixth, Peisel kicked off a rally with a double down the left field line. Two batters later and now with the bases loaded, freshman Angel Biondo (Hauppauge, N.Y.) drove in all three runners with a double to left. Freshman Zach Kenny (Hicksville, N.Y.) continued the rally with a single to right and junior Joe Clarke (Maybrook, N.Y.) walked to load the bases once again. Morelli followed with his grand slam home run to left field, staking the Knights to an 8-2 advantage.

Junior pitcher Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) was the beneficiary of the sixth inning explosion. Despite allowing just five hits and two runs over five innings, McCrea was on the hook for the loss until the seven-run sixth. Instead, the junior picked up his third win of the year. He struck out five.

Peisel continued to wield a hot bat and hit safely for the eighth game in a row. He finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Kenny also had three hits (3-for-5) with a run scored and a run batted in. Clarke finished 2-for-5 with a run, while junior John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.) also finished with multiple hits (2-for-4). Junior Max Tecce (Glen Cove, N.Y.), who had hit safely in 16 consecutive games, went hitless for the first time in nearly a month.

The Knights will finish off the Skyline Conference regular season against NYU-Poly on Monday. They hit postseason play on Wednesday.
