Knights Hold Off Maritime

BRONX, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team held off Maritime College for a close 8-7 win in Skyline Conference play. The Knights have now won two consecutive games and improve to 3-9 overall and 2-5 in Skyline play. The Privateers finish their season with a 2-10 overall record and a 1-7 record in the Skyline.

Mount sophomore Sharon Cranwell (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) converted a free-position shot one minute into the game to give the Knights their first lead. The Privateers responded with two goals in the next four minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Despite scoring the first goal of the game the Knights struggled to find the back of the net. Sophomore Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) scored off a free-position shot at the 13:44 mark to tie the game, 2-2. Two consecutive goals by Cranwell in the closing two minutes of the half gave the Knights a two goal cushion (4-2) going into halftime.

Maritime's Kristen Wilson netted a free-position shot less than a minute into the second half to bring the Privateers to within one (4-3). The Knights responded with a pair of goals from freshman Erica Massmann (West Babylon, N.Y.) and Amanda Giarrizzo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) less than one minute apart. The Privateers chipped away at the Knights' lead (6-3) and brought with just 14:17 remaining in the game the Knights lead by one (6-5). Mount junior Ellen Cashin (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) converted a critical free-position shot at the 9:21 mark to give the Knights a two goal lead. Spadaro netted her second of the game with 7:09 remaining to push the lead back to three (8-5). The Privateers increased the pressure in the closing minutes of the game and brought the game to within one 8-7 with 5:48 left in the game. At the 1:45 mark Maritime midfielder Kristin Saporito picked up a groundball in the defensive end of the field and transitioned into the attack to give the Privateers' possession at a crucial point in the game. Massmann stripped Saporito with a minute and a half remaining in the game and the Knights possessed the ball until the clock expired.

Cranwell scored a team-high three goals in addition to grabbing three draw controls and causing two turnovers. Spadaro added two goals and Cashin, Massmann and Giarrizzo all chipped in with one each. Massmann played an aggressive game at both ends of the field and finished with three groundballs and a team-high three caused turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper Mary Greenlese (Dover Plains, N.Y.) played the entire 60 minutes in net and totaled five saves.

With the win over Maritime the Knights look poised to return to the Skyline playoffs, but first they face The Sage Colleges in their regular season finale. The Knights will face the Gators on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. Note that the game will be played at RPI.
