HOBOKEN, N.J. – Despite five three-pointers and a team-high 15 points from sophomore
Lenny Ragaglia (Staten Island, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team dropped their ECAC semifinal contest to Stevens Institute of Technology by a final score of 71-66. The Knights finish their season at 19-9.
Mount Saint Mary led by one at the half and continued to lead for the opening minutes of the second half. A layup from junior
Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) at the 16:16 mark made the score, 39-35, in favor of the Knights.
From there, however, it would be Stevens who would rip off a 24-7 run. Sophomore Russ Thompson (West Orange, N.J.) capped the run with a bucket at the 8:18 mark that gave the Ducks a 59-46 advantage.
Not about to quit, Mount Saint Mary clawed back into the game with a 13-2 run. When junior
Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) found Ragaglia for a three-pointer at the 3:45 mark, the Knights trailed by just two, 61-59.
Stevens answered with the next four points, getting back-to-back buckets from sophomore Sheldon Jones (Queens, N.Y.). The Ducks continued to lead by at least four points until the final 30 seconds. Valdez drained a three-pointer with 15 seconds to make it a three-point game, 67-64, but Stevens would take care of their free throws down the stretch.
Ragaglia finished 5-of-11 from three and with a team-high 15 points. Valdez connected on 5-of-6 from the field and totaled 12 points to go along with eight rebounds. Milella also reached double figures with 13 points.
Stevens got a game-high 23 points from Jones, who connected on 7-of-12 from the field and 9-of-10 at the line. Thompson added 15 points and junior Simon Smith (Cranford, N.J.) pitched in with 14.
The 19 Mount Saint Mary wins are the most for the program since a 22-6 season in 2005-06.
