NEWBURGH, N.Y. – In a game that included a furious second half rally and last-minute drama, the Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-10 decision to Wells College in non-conference action on Friday afternoon. The Knights fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Express improve to 1-0.
With 5:06 on the clock, Wells freshman Courtney Grosser (Penfield, N.Y.) put home a free position attempt to tie the game at 10-10. The Knights possessed the ensuing draw, though, and ran the clock down inside the final three minutes. The Mount would have their best chance to win at the 2:35 mark, as a shot from junior
Ellen Cashin (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) rung off the post.
Still with possession as the clock ticked under two minutes, the Knights set up sophomore
Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) for a look at the net. Her shot was well-read by Wells senior goalie Elizabeth Barclay (Laporte, Pa.), however, and the Express took over the ball following the save.
Following a clear, Express sophomore Sarah Allen (Clay, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the game-winner following a nice feed from senior Stefanie Miller (Barton, N.Y.). Barclay would need one more save, this time with 17 seconds remaining, to seal the victory for the visitors.
The Knights only made it a game with a furious second half rally. Trailing 9-6 with 14:11 remaining, Mount Saint Mary ripped off four straight goals to nab a 10-9 advantage. Cashin kicked off the run with an unassisted tally at 13:17 to cut the deficit to two. Freshman
Erica Massmann (West Babylon, N.Y.) tallied at 10:54 to make it a one-goal game, and then found sophomore
Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) for the tying goal at the 8:54 mark. Massmann scored again with 5:40 remaining to give the Knights a one-goal cushion.
Massmann finished with a team-high four goals and six groundballs, while Spadaro completed a hat trick with three goals. Sophomore
Sharon Cranwell (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) tallied two goals and a team-high five draw controls.
For Wells, Allen led the way with four goals. Grosser, Miller, and sophomore Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.) each added a pair of goals for the Express. Barclay finished with 13 saves and a hard-earned victory.
The Knights head to Florida to compete in their next scheduled contest. They'll take on Alvernia University at noon on March 7 in Orlando.
