Baseball Completes Skyline Weekend at 3-1

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – A road-weary Mount Saint Mary College baseball team returned to campus with a record of 3-1 from four Skyline Conference games over the weekend. The Knights split with Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday before sweeping Yeshiva on Sunday.

In the opener on Saturday, Mount Saint Vincent sophomore Mike McManus (Queens, N.Y.) fired the first no-hitter in school history as the Dolphins went on to a 3-0 victory. McManus walked five and struck out five during his nine-inning gem.

Despite jumping out to a two-run lead in the first inning of game two, the Knights trailed, 5-2 after two and a half innings of play. In the bottom of the third, a two-run double from junior Max Tecce (Glen Cove, N.Y.) trimmed the Mount Saint Vincent lead to a single run. Mount Saint Mary would leave the bases loaded, however, spoiling a good chance to take the lead.

In the fourth, the freshman Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) walked and moved to third on a single from sophomore Michael Morelli (Washingtonville, N.Y.). Senior Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.) followed with double, plating Carminati and moving Morelli to third. Now with two outs, it was Tecce who struck again. His second double of the game scored Morelli and Peisel to give the Knights a 7-5 advantage. Tecce would later score on a Mount Saint Vincent error, making it 8-5.

The Knights would add five more runs in the sixth. Carminati drove home a pair of runs with a double and junior Joe Clarke (Maybrook, N.Y.) quickly followed with another two-bagger, allowing Carminati to score from second. Peisel laced another single to score Clarke, the Mount's 13th run of the contest.

After entering in relief at the start of the fourth inning, freshman Russ Pagano (Cedar Grove, N.J.) was excellent. He allowed just two hits and one unearned run over the final four innings to claim the victory. Pagano walked two and struck out two.

Tecce finished 3-for-3 with five RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Carminati was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, while Peisel batted 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

On Sunday, the Mount jumped all over the Yeshiva pitching during a 17-4 rout in the opener. The Knights pounded out 15 hits and scored runs in six of the nine innings.

Carminati led the way with a 5-for-7 performance that included four singles and a triple. The freshman scored four runs and drove home five more. Sophomore Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.) recorded three hits (3-for-5) and drove home three runs. Junior John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.) also recorded multiple hits (2-for-3) with a run scored and a pair of RBIs.

Freshman pitcher Dean White (Bethel, Conn.) worked seven innings to earn the win. He allowed just six hits and one earned run while striking out six.

A tighter affair in game two, the Knights scratched out a run in the top of the first when freshman Zach Kenny (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored on a Morelli double. The Mount would lead, 1-0, until a two-run double from senior Billy Casey (Marlboro, N.Y.) in the top of the fifth. They would add two insurance runs in the sixth and held on for a 5-2 win.

Senior Matt Paci (Florida, N.Y.) collected the win with six solid innings of work. He yielded five hits and pair of runs while striking out nine Yeshiva hitters. Sophomore Joe CoFrancesco (Hamden, Conn.) worked a perfect seventh inning, striking out two, to earn the save.

Hoping for some nicer weather, the Knights look ahead to a pair of non-conference games during the week. They'll host Albertus Magnus on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. before travelling to SUNY Oneonta for a 3:30 start on Wednesday. The Mount will travel to NYU-Poly and Farmingdale for S
