Behind Solid Pitching, Mount Sweeps Old Westbury to Open Skyline Play

FISHKILL, N.Y. – Opening up Skyline Conference play in fine fashion, Mount Saint Mary College swept a pair of games from SUNY College at Old Westbury on Sunday at Dutchess Stadium. The Knights (4-7, 2-0 Skyline) won the nine-inning opener, 5-3, and the seven-inning second game, 3-2. Old Westbury is now 4-6 overall (0-2 Skyline).

Junior starting pitcher Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) went the distance in game two, yielding six hits and two runs while striking out five. He threw 58 of his 87 pitches for strikes to record the seven-inning complete game victory.

Scoreless through three and a half, the Knights finally broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.) and junior Josh Depew (Montgomery, N.Y.) laced back-to-back, two-out singles, and when the Old Westbury first baseman bobbled a groundball from sophomore Thomas McNoble (Breezy Point, N.Y.), Conroy scored the first run of the game. Depew scored when the next batter, freshman Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.), singled through the right side to make it 2-0.

With his team still leading by two, junior Joe Clarke (Maybrook, N.Y.) led off the fifth with a single to the deep hole at shortstop. Sophomore Michael Morelli (Washingtonville, N.Y.) roped a double to left-center, scoring Clarke all the way from first to make it 3-0.

The Panthers would make it interesting by stringing together three singles and a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth for a pair of runs. In the seventh and final inning, Old Westbury junior Chris DeGennaro (Manorville, N.Y.) led off with a single through the middle, but was erased on a wacky double play. On a sacrifice bunt attempt by the next batter, McCrea fielded the bunt and fired to first for the sure out. DeGennaro, however, attempted to go from first to third and was nailed on a heads-up play by Mount first baseman, Morelli, and third baseman, McNoble. With two outs, McCrea got the final batter to ground out sharply to Clarke at second, completing the sweep for the Knights.

Clarke was the offensive star of game two, going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Conroy was 2-for-2.

In game one, it was senior Billy Casey (Marlboro, N.Y.) who delivered the big blow in the sixth inning. With the Knights trailing, 3-2, and a runner on second with two outs, Casey drove a 2-2 pitch off the foul pole down the left field line for a go-ahead home run.

Matt Costello
The Knights tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Morelli scored on a fielder's choice from junior Matt Costello (Middletown, N.Y.), making it 5-3 in favor of the Mount.

Depew, the starting pitcher in game one, was stellar for eight innings, allowing just five hits and three unearned runs. With the 119th pitch of his afternoon, Depew induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the eighth inning and preserve his team's two-run cushion. The junior struck out six while walking four.

Sophomore reliever Marc Soevyn (Elmont, N.Y.) needed just eight pitches to work a perfect ninth, getting a pair of groundouts and a flyout to center for his first save of the year.

Costello finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while senior Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.) also recorded multiple hits (2-for-4) and scored a run. Junior Max Tecce (Glen Cove, N.Y.) drove home a run with a single to right-center in the second inning and scored on Casey's homer in the sixth. He finished 1-for-3.

The Knights will host 20th-ranked SUNY Cortland in non-conference action on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill.
