NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's lacrosse lost their inaugural game on the new Kaplan Field, a 14-3 setback at the hands of Centenary College. The Knights are now 1-2 overall, while the Cyclones move to 1-0.
It was a promising start for the Knights as freshman
Stephen White (Schenectady, N.Y.) opened the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 13:24 mark of the first quarter. Unfortunately, Centenary was unfazed by yielding the first goal and proceeded to close out the half on an 8-0 run. Sophomore Robert Nuzzolese (Woodbury, N.Y.) would score all four Cyclone goals during the second quarter.
Centenary maintained control in the second half, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter to cap an 11-goal run. Mount sophomore
Andrew Pullen (Farmingdale, N.Y.) finally broke through with an unassisted goal at 2:31 of the third, but it was too little, too late.
Freshman
Matt O'Donnell (Wallkill, N.Y.) would add a fourth quarter tally for the Knights to make the final score 14-3.
Nuzzolese finished with six goals and eight groundballs. Senior Joe Swantkoski (Flemington, N.J.) scored three times, while freshman Steve Orsini (Sewell, N.J.) added a pair of tallied for the Cyclones. Orsini was the best player on the field for much of the afternoon, winning 8-of-11 faceoffs and collecting a game-high 11 groundballs.
Freshman
Shawn Cobstill (Oneonta, N.Y.) made 18 saves in net for the Mount.
For their next game, the Knights hit the road for Lebanon Valley College. The contest is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5.
