Mount Drops Season Opener

NEWBURGH, N.Y.-The Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team suffered a loss in their season opener to visiting Hartwick College by a score of 14-2. The Knights are 0-1 on the season, while Hartwick moves to 1-0.

An unassisted tally by Hartwick junior Emily Walsh got the Hawks on the board just 15 seconds into the game. Two additional Hartwick goals in the opening five minutes of the game advanced the lead to 3-0. Mount freshman Mikaely Whitehouse (Columbia, Conn.) netted a goal at the 22:30 mark to get the Knights on the board. Whitehouse recorded her first collegiate goal off an assist from sophomore Sharon Cranwell (Putnam Valley, N.Y.). Freshman Erica Massmann (West Babylon, N.Y.) converted a free-position shot with 19:31 remaining in the first half to cut the Hawks lead to 4-2. The Knights would remain scoreless for the remainder of the game and Hartwick held an 8-2 lead going into halftime.

Two unassisted goals by the Hawks in the opening minutes of the second half put the game out of reach for the Knights. The Mount struggled to maintain possession of the ball in the second half and only recorded five shots during the half. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Folino (Staten Island, N.Y.) made three of her four saves during the second half of play.

Massmann finished the game with one goal, three groundballs and one caused turnover. Fellow freshman Jess Walker (Franklin Square, N.Y.) turned in a strong defensive effort and grabbed a team-high five groundballs.

Hartwick freshman Brittany McCabe finished with three goals and one assist and teammate Erica Scicchitano chipped in with three goals.

The Knights will host Wells College on Friday, March 4. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
