FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Senior righthander Ryan Williams (Kearny, N.J.) blanked Mount Saint Mary College for eight innings on just two hits while his Rutgers-Newark teammates pounded out seven extra-base hits in an 11-0 non-conference win at Diamond Nation on Tuesday.
Williams struck out nine and walked just one while allowing a two-out single through the right side of the infield by Knight third baseman
Thomas McNoble (Breezy Point, N.Y.) in the third innning and a lead-off double to right centerfield by centerfielder
Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) in the eighth before turning the shutout over to freshman Mike Wieczerzak (Clifton, N.J.). The rookie yielded only a two-out walk to complete the gem.
Senior Matt Connors (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) broke the Rutgers-Newark career runs scored record, scoring for the 146th time in his career after walking in the fourth. He also singled, stole second and scored in the three-run fifth inning to go two for four.
Sophomore rightfielder Owen Harshaney (Dunellen, N.J.) hammered a solo home run to start off the three-run third inning and swatted a ground-rule double to help ignite the three-run fifth. The ground rule double hit netting far over the left field fence, but was judged a double by the umpires.
Junior first baseman Chris Ballester (Freehold, N.J.) was a home run short of the cycle, going three for four with a two-run single in the third, an RBI triple to straightaway centerfield in the fourth and a ground rule double to left centerfield in the fifth.
Senior centerfielder Michael DiCenso (Wayne, N.J.) drove in four runs with a three-run home run in the fourth and an infield grounder in the fifth to finish two for four. Senior shortstop Patrick Reitemeyer (Kearny, N.J.) went two for four with a double and scored twice while junior designated hitter Mike Ciaramello (Bloomfield, N.J.) added a double and a sacrifice fly to the Raider attack.
