Ragaglia's Hot Hand Pushes Mount to Seventh Straight Win

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Running their win streak to seven consecutive games, the Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team edged Skyline Conference nemesis, Farmingdale State College, on Saturday by a final score of 74-68. The Knights improved to 15-5 overall and maintained their grasp on first place in the conference at 13-2, while the Rams dropped to 12-8 overall (11-4 Skyline).

Tied at 47-47 with less than eight minutes to play, Mount sophomore Lenny Ragaglia (Staten Island, N.Y.) sparked an 8-0 run with a three-pointer at the 7:23 mark. Junior Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) converted a pair of free throws with 6:39 remaining, but it was a second three-pointer from Ragaglia at 5:46 that put the Knights in the driver's seat, 55-47.

The Rams pulled back to within six with a bucket at the 4:45 mark, but again, it was Ragaglia with the big shot. The sophomore drilled yet another triple, this time on a feed from Valdez, to make the score, 60-51. Farmingdale would get no closer than four points over the final four minutes, allowing the Knights to complete a 74-68 victory.

For the second contest in a row, senior Tim Morris (Greenwich, N.Y.) led the Mount in scoring, this time with 18 points on 7-of-9 from the field. Valdez completed a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Ragaglia scored 12 points, all by way of the three-pointer. Freshman Donte Howell (Baldwin, N.Y.) also reached double figures with 10.

Junior Dyshaun Flournoy (Brentwood, N.Y.) led Farmingdale with 20 points, but was limited to 6-for-17 from the floor. Junior Richard Payton (Amityville, N.Y.) was the only other Ram in double figures with 12 points.

The Knights held a 40-30 advantage on the glass and also made the most of their time at the free throw line, making 22-of-32 attempts. Farmingdale (43.9-percent) outshot the Mount (41.1-percent) from the field.

Mount Saint Mary finally returns home to the Kaplan Center for a game with the Polytechnic Institute of NYU on Tuesday, February 5. The tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. inside the Kaplan Center.
