NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Behind goals from freshman
Vanessa DiSilvio (Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore
Sara Sheehan (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and yet another tremendous defensive effort, the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team defeated Farmingdale State College by a score of 2-0 on Saturday to claim the program's first-ever regular season Skyline Conference title. The Knights finish the regular season at 16-2-1 overall and 8-0-0 in the Skyline.
After a sloppy opening fifteen minutes, both teams began to pick up their play. Farmingdale generated the first legitimate scoring chance in the 19th minute, but an attempt by senior Rebecca Richman (West Islip, N.Y.) was turned away by a diving save from Mount sophomore goalkeeper
Jacquelyn Mancini (Valley Stream, N.Y.). The Rams would go on to out-shoot the Knights by a margin of 10-5 in the opening half, but the game was scoreless at the break.
In the opening minutes of the second half, DiSilvio was fouled in the box during a Mount Saint Mary corner kick attempt. The freshman was awarded a penalty kick and coolly converted the opportunity to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage.
The teams would trade excellent chances near the 60th minute, but both goalkeepers came up with big saves. In the 59th minute, Farmingdale senior Amanda Maass (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) made a diving save to her left to stop a shot from Sheehan. Just two minutes later in the 61st minute, Mancini would foil Richman once again, this time charging forward to make a sliding save on the breakaway attempt.
Sheehan would finally break through for an insurance goal in the 65th minute, outracing a Farmingdale defender following a pass from DiSilvio. Sheehan took a touch and then fired it past Maass to make it 2-0.
From there, the Mount defense clamped down. The Knights received strong efforts from sophomore
Tara McDermott (Tewksbury, N.J.) and junior
Lindsey Oro (Holtsville, N.Y.) in the middle of the back line. Freshman
Marissa Segreto (West Islip, N.Y.) was also a big contributor in the back line, while senior
Gable Herczeg (Bethel, Conn.) did a nice job in the center midfield.
Mancini was the story for the Knights, battling her way through the second half. The sophomore made eight saves to preserve the shutout for the Knights, her ninth of the season and the team's 13th of the year. Mount Saint Mary did not allow a goal to a Skyline Conference opponent during the regular season.
Herczeg, along with fellow seniors
Erin McKeon (Watertown, Conn.),
Colleen Ryan (Point Lookout, N.Y.), and
Colleen Cappadora (Goshen, N.Y.), was honored before the start of today's contest for Senior Day.
The Knights have earned the top seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament and will host a semifinal on Wednesday, November 2.
