FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – After falling to the loser's bracket earlier in the day, the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team exited the Skyline Conference tournament with a 15-2 loss to SUNY College at Old Westbury. The Knights close the season with an overall record of 14-20.
The Panthers tallied one run in each of the first two innings and the Mount responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the second. After sophomore
Max Tecce (Glen Cove, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a passed ball, sophomore
John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.) singled through the right side to cut the deficit in half.
Unfortunately, Old Westbury sprinted away from the Knights with three runs in the fifth, three runs in the sixth, and two more in the seventh. Junior
Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.) doubled to lead off the bottom half of the seventh, moved to third on a groundout by Conroy, and then scored on a groundout by freshman
Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.).
The Knights wouldn't score again and could only watch as the Panthers tacked on two more in the eighth and three more in the ninth, closing out the game with a 15-2 advantage. Sophomore James Huber (North Babylon, N.Y.) went the distance for Old Westbury, allowing just eight hits and two earned runs to claim the win.
Tecce and Peisel each finished with a pair of hits and a run scored. Conroy was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Old Westbury advanced to play Farmingdale State College in the championship series.
