NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Senior pitchers
Frank Snyder (Wallkill, N.Y.) and
Kyle Smith (Franklin Square, N.Y.) combined on a six-hit shutout as Mount Saint Mary College defeated Maritime College, 9-0, in a Skyline Conference quarterfinal game on Wednesday. The Knights improved to 13-18 overall and will take on St. Joseph's College in the next round of the tournament.
After allowing hits to three of the first five batters he faced, Snyder mowed down the next fourteen hitters to finish off six scoreless innings. The Wallkill native recorded twelve groundball outs, five strikeouts, and watched as junior catcher
Billy Casey (Marlboro, N.Y.) gunned down the only base-stealer for Maritime.
Smith was equally effective over the final three innings, only needing to work out of trouble in the eighth frame. With runners at the corners, Smith induced a slow roller to third to end the inning and keep the Privateers scoreless. He worked a perfect ninth to seal the deal for the Knights.
Senior leadoff man
Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.) started things off with a bang for Mount Saint Mary, drilling a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for his first career home run. The Knights added to the lead in the second inning as freshman
Michael Matuk (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) singled through the left side to score freshman
Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.).
Mount Saint Mary pushed the lead to five with three runs in the fifth inning. After a leadoff triple by freshman
Matt Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y.), Casey laced a single to center field to drive him home. Sophomore
Max Tecce (Glen Cove, N.Y.) walked and Cherubino was hit by a pitch to load the bases for senior
Rich DeRosa (Valley Stream, N.Y.). As he has done so often this season, DeRosa came through with a single to right, driving home two more runs for the Mount.
In the sixth inning, Prescia led off with a single and then moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Casey singled through the left side to score Prescia and then moved to second on a single by sophomore
John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.). Cherubino singled through the right side to plate Casey, bringing DeRosa back to the plate with another RBI chance. The senior drove home two more runs with a double to left field, sending the Mount to a nine-run advantage.
DeRosa would finish the contest 3-for-3 with four runs batted in. Casey was also a menace at the plate, belting out four singles (4-for-5), scoring twice, and driving in a pair of runs. Conroy had three hits (3-for-5) and a run scored, while Prescia batted 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Entering the double elimination format of the Skyline Conference tournament, Mount Saint Mary will take on second-seeded St. Joseph's College. The game is scheduled for Friday night at Farmingdale State College.
