NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Boosted by a five-goal performance from freshman
Sharon Cranwell (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team defeated Sage, 16-3, in a Skyline Conference game on Monday evening. The Knights improved to 4-4 overall and to 2-2 in the Skyline.
Mount Saint Mary led 8-0 at the half, a string of goals that included three from Cranwell. Sage sophomore Ginelle Butler (Malta, N.Y.) opened the second half by converting a free position shot to get the Gators on the board. The teams traded goals until a 4-0 run by the Knights pushed the advantage to double digits. Mount Saint Mary scored the final three goals of the contest to take a 16-3 decision.
For the Knights, freshman
Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) added three goals and two assists, while junior
Ellen Cashin (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) also netted three goals. Freshmen
Dina Nicastro (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and
Catherine Conde (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) each added a pair of goals. Also getting in on the act was freshman
Katie Forrest (Hampden, Mass.) who scored her first collegiate goal.
On top of Butler's goal, Sage seniors Christina Gray (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Jessica Hankle (Wynantskill, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the Gators. Freshman Courtney Reed (Mechanicville, N.Y.) made eight stops in the loss.
In a reversal from Friday's loss, Mount Saint Mary controlled 15-of-21 draws. The Knights also nabbed a 29-25 advantage in ground balls.
Up next for the Mount is a trip to the Bronx and a date with the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The Knights will take on the Dolphins at Gaelic Park on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
