Knights Fall to Wells

AURORA, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College outshot Wells College, 38-37, but the advantage didn't translate to the scoreboard as Wells earned an 18-11 victory in non-conference action on Friday. The Express (1-4) collected their first victory of the season, while the Knights dropped back to 2-2.

Trailing by as many as six in the first half, Mount Saint Mary rallied in the final seven minutes of the period and a goal by freshman Catherine Conde (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) with four seconds remaining made it a two-goal game (9-7) at the break.

Freshman Sharon Cranwell (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) brought the Knights even closed in the opening ticks of the second half, netting an unassisted goal to pull to within one. The comeback wasn't to be, however, as Wells rattled off the next four goals to seize control of the game.

Freshman Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) scored at the 13:50 mark to cut the deficit to four, and then sophomore Kate Wynne (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tallied her first collegiate goal at 12:37 to make it three. Wells would stall out the clock, though, and with Mount Saint Mary forced to gamble on defense, the Express scored five unanswered goals to put the game out of reach for good.

Conde led the Knights with three goals, while Cranwell, Spadaro, and freshman Dina Nicastro (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) each tallied two goals. Cranwell totaled a team-high seven groundballs and four draw controls.

For Wells, freshman Sarah Allen (Clay, N.Y.) scored six times to lead the Express. Senior Emily Lotkowictz (Skaneateles, N.Y.) led all scorers with eight points (five goals, three assists), while freshman Eleanor Eshenour (Waterloo, N.Y.) found the back of the net four times. Junior goalie Liz Barclay (Laporte, Pa.) made 24 saves to claim the victory.

Up next for the Knights is a Skyline Conference matchup with Kean University. The Mount will host the Cougars on Sunday, March 21, starting at 2:00 p.m. on Kaplan Field.
