NEWBURGH, N.Y. – A well-contested swim meet on Friday night resulted in a 109-75 victory for the men's team and a very tight 104-100 loss for the women's team. The men are now 4-0 on the young season, while the women suffered their first loss and fell to 3-1.
Junior
Enrique Naudy (Monroe, N.Y.) and senior
Brian Heitman (Ramsey, N.J.) were the big winners on the men's side, each taking home three individual events. Naudy captured the 200 freestyle (1:51.06), the 100 freestyle (52.46), and the 100 backstroke (55.94), while Heitman took home the 1000 freestyle (11:23.25), the 100 butterfly (1:00.18), and the 500 freestyle (5:24.19).
Freshman
Taylor Callahan (Middlebury, Conn.) was the only other event-winner for the men, taking the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:02.87.
The women's meet came down to the final relay. Trailing by nine points headed into the final event, the Knights needed a first place points and third place points to force a tie. Unfortunately, Drew took the second and third positions to earn a four-point victory.
Each race on the women's side seemed to be decided by fractions of a second. It started right away in the 1000 freestyle, as sophomore
Brianna Perazella (Cheshire, Conn.) finished second (11:18.94) by just 1.03 seconds. Junior
Censi Danner (Saugerties, N.Y.) turned the tables for the Knights in the 50 freestyle, edging the field by 0.14 seconds with a time of 26.10. In event nine, Perazella lost another incredibly close race, this time by 0.09 seconds in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:23.98.
The trend continued as freshman
Stephi Economos (Hurley, N.Y.) won the 100 butterfly (1:07.04) by 0.24 seconds and then freshman
Allison Wyatt (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) captured another close race in the 100 freestyle. Her time of 58.68 was fastest by 0.05 seconds. Wyatt also went on to win the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.16.
The Knights have a short turnaround and will host SUNY College at Old Westbury on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
