NEWBURGH, NY – Despite 14 shots and several quality chances inside the box, the offensive woes continued for the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team in a 2-0 loss to Skyline Conference opponent Old Westbury on Saturday. The Blue Knights dropped to 2-5-1 (0-1-1 Skyline) while the Panthers improved to 3-4-1 (2-1-0 Skyline).
Mount Saint Mary had the better of the play in the first half, but couldn't find the back of the net. Senior
Danielle Bucco (Washingtonville, N.Y.) had the best chance of the opening period, forcing a tough save by Old Westbury sophomore Jennifer Kupfer (Bellmore, N.Y.) on a low shot to the far post in the 41st minute.
The Panthers finally broke through on the scoreboard in the 68th minute. Senior Jennifer Campisi (Commack, N.Y.) fed a pass into a scramble of players in the box and senior Courtney Dixon (Baldwin, N.Y.) collected the ball long enough to knock it past junior goalkeeper
Megan Cotta (Brick, N.J.).
Trailing by a goal, Bucco found the ball on her foot with another excellent opportunity to score. A long pass from sophomore
Colleen Ryan (Point Lookout, N.Y.) found Bucco behind the Old Westbury defense and one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper, Kupfer, made an excellent decision to leave her line and closed quickly on Bucco to make the save.
In the 84th minute, Old Westbury sophomore Cassandra Esposito (Valley Stream, N.Y.) closed the door on the Blue Knights with a beautiful individual effort. After collecting the ball about 30 yards away from the goal, Esposito scooted past two defenders and found the netting inside the far post for her 11th goal of the season.
With just one point in two Skyline Conference games, the Blue Knights face an important date with Sage on Wednesday, September 30. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Kaplan Field.
