NEWBURGH, NY – In a game that turned ugly in the fourth inning, the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team lost a non-conference contest to SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday night, 20-2. The Blue Knights dropped to 18-4 while the Hawks improved to 6-15.
The Hawks were led by freshman Mike Sherlock (Liverpool, N.Y.) who was 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs and senior Tyler Terlecky (Binghamton, N.Y.) who was 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs.
The Blue Knights were led by senior
Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) who was 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Freshman
John Conroy (Middletown, N.Y.), sophomore
Billy Casey (Marlboro, N.Y.), and senior
Jim Marsh (Maybrook, N.Y.) each added two hits apiece.
Mount Saint Mary threatened in the bottom of the first as the Blue Knights loaded the bases with one out, but freshman pitcher Timmy Chelius (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) got senior
Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.) to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. The Blue Knights would take the early lead in the bottom of the third when
Brian Visconti hit a triple of the wall in left center field and scored on a passed ball.
The Hawks would score four in the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles from freshman Paul Merola (Cornwall, N.Y.) and Terlecky and a Matt O'Neill (Westchester, Pa.) double to score them both. Sherlock doubled home O'Neill and later scored on a wild pitch for the 4-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Hawks put up a nine on the scoreboard, bringing 13 batters to the plate in the inning. They would add two in the sixth and four more in the eighth.
Freshman starting pitcher Timmy Chelius shut down the Blue Knights allowing two runs (1 ER) on ten hits in six innings and striking out two to earn his first collegiate victory. Junior Brian O'Connor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) took the loss for the Mount.
Up next for the Blue Knights is another home non-conference tilt, this time with Western Connecticut State University. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start in Newburgh.
