Senzamici Pitches Mount Past Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, CT – Freshman Matthew Senzamici (West Babylon, N.Y.) allowed just seven hits and three runs in six-plus innings on Tuesday evening as the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team defeated Albertus Magnus College by a score of 9-4. The Blue Knights improved to 18-3 overall while the Falcons fell to 5-12.

Senzamici picked up his second win of the season by pitching into the seventh inning. The freshman let up just one earned run and exited the game with a 6-3 lead. He struck out eight and walked none.

The Blue Knights jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.) led off with a walk and senior Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) followed up with a single. Senior Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.) drove home both runners with a single and then scored from second on a double by sophomore Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.). Peisel advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI-groundout by freshman Brian McNoble (Lynbrook, N.Y.) to make it 4-0.

After the Falcons responded with one run in the bottom half of the first, the Blue Knights hung up two more in the top of the third. Freshman Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.) laced a two-run double that allowed Visconti and Germann to score, making it 6-1 in favor of the Mount.

With the score at 6-3 in the eighth, the Blue Knights strung together three consecutive hits to provide some insurance to the bullpen. McNoble led off with a triple and scored on a single by McCrea. McCrea scored from first on a double by senior Jim Marsh (Maybrook, N.Y.) and then Marsh scored on an RBI-groundout by freshman Max Tecce (Glen Cove, N.Y.).

Freshman Carl Henchey (Coxsackie, N.Y.) recorded the final two outs of the seventh inning before turning it over to senior Scott Francis (Pawcatuck, Conn.). Francis allowed two hits and a run but prevented any major damage with a six-run lead. Junior Chris Gage (Saugerties, N.Y.) pitched a perfect ninth to seal the win for the Blue Knights.

Visconti, Germann, Peisel, McNoble, and McCrea each recorded a pair of hits and combined to drive in seven of the nine runs. They also scored seven of the team's nine runs.

The Blue Knights pitching staff limited the Falcons to just nine hits and worked around five errors. The four pitchers didn't allow a single walk.

Up next for the Mount is a non-conference home game with SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, April 8. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start.
