BRONX, NY – With strong pitching from senior
Michael Redmond (Stone Ridge, N.Y.) and freshman
Dan McCrea (Hicksville, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team swept Maritime College in a Skyline Conference double-header on Sunday. The Blue Knights won the first game, 10-1, and the second game, 5-0, to improve to 17-3 overall and to 6-2 in the conference. The Privateers dropped to 2-13 overall and to 0-8 in the league.
In the first game, Redmond pitched six innings and allowed just five hits and one run to claim his fifth win of the season. Tied at one through the first four innings, the Blue Knights scored three in the fifth and five in the sixth and Redmond exited with a 9-1 lead.
Mount Saint Mary scratched out a run in the second inning when sophomore
Louis Peisel (Brewster, N.Y.) reached on an error and then moved around to third on a sacrifice and a groundout. Sophomore
Billy Casey (Marlboro, N.Y.) came through with a two-out RBI single to drive home the game's first run.
The Blue Knights scored three error-aided runs in the fifth inning before exploding for five runs in the sixth inning. After three consecutive singles loaded the bases, freshman
Max Tecce (Glen Cove, N.Y.) recorded the fourth consecutive hit inning, this time an RBI single. A batter later, it was senior
Brian Visconti (Newburgh, N.Y.) who came through with the big hit once again. The senior drove a bases-clearing double and then came around to score on a single by senior
Matthew Germann (Islip, N.Y.).
Sophomore
Justin Murphy (Wallkill, N.Y.), junior Brian O'Connor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.), and freshman
Carl Henchey (Coxsackie, N.Y.) combined for three scoreless innings in relief. They allowed just one hit over the final three innings to preserve the win for the Blue Knights.
Tecce and senior
Jim Marsh (Maybrook, N.Y.) finished with three hits each. Tecce scored a run and drove home two while Marsh scored a pair of runs. Visconti went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
In game two, McCrea allowed just five hits during a seven-inning shutout. He struck out four while walking two to pick up his fourth victory of the season.
The Blue Knights were quick to support the freshman, rapping out five hits in the first inning that resulted in two runs. Germann drove home junior
Mike Umphlett (North Stonington, Conn.) with a single and then Germann scored on a single by Marsh.
In the third, freshman
Brian McNoble (Lynbrook, N.Y.) added to the lead with an RBI single that made the score 3-0. A two-out hit from Marsh brought home two more runs and secured the advantage for the Blue Knights.
Marsh and Visconti each had two hits, but it was Marsh who collected three RBIs. Germann was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
Mount Saint Mary will travel to Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday, April 7 for their next scheduled game. The non-conference tilt is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start in New Haven, Connecticut.
